This is a small piece based on a duck figurine by Hiroyoshi Asaka, a contemporary artist who creates three-dimensional sculptures using marble.
Duck figures are familiar to Japanese people.
It may give the illusion that it is made from styrofoam, but it is actually a work of modern art intricately carved from solid marble.
Styrofoam, a light and brittle material created by modern scientific inventions, is imitated and replaced by marble, a hard and heavy material formed over eons of time since antiquity.
Asaka's reason for choosing polystyrene foam as his subject of imitation reflects his own keen observation of modern society.
Like the plastic duck figures that children enjoy floating in the bath, polystyrene foam, which is made by inflating resin, is one of the materials used all over the world today.
However, despite their convenience, mass-produced resin products are directly linked to humanity's waste problems and environmental pollution.
Asaka uses marble, a material created by nature over millions of years, to imitate its polar opposite, providing insight into the environmental problems facing humanity.
Why not add a piece of contemporary art with a strong presence and deep message to your home interior or to your art collection?
