Kei SUGIYAMA is an emerging contemporary artist who has been expanding his presence in recent years through numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries, department stores, and art fairs both in Japan and internationally.

Working under the central theme of "Portraits of Absence," Sugiyama focuses on depicting personal belongings and everyday objects.
By gathering and painting these items, he suggests the personality and living environment of an individual without portraying the figure itself, expressing their presence through painting.

Sugiyama is also known for works in which collections of furniture and daily necessities are depicted as visual analogies to Buddhist imagery such as mandalas and Nehan-zu (paintings of the Buddha's Nirvana).
Through this approach, he reinterprets from a contemporary perspective the traditional Japanese sensibility of perceiving the presence of deities and spirits within various objects..
