This is a small piece with a circle motif by Akito Inoue, a young contemporary artist who was selected for the Idemitsu Art Award in 2022 and is expected to achieve even greater success in the future.

Inoue grinds drawing charcoal into the fabric to the extreme, creating glossy, jet-black circles.
The work is like that of a Zen monk striving for a state of selflessness.
The unevenness of the surface is caused by fragments of charcoal that were roughly shaved off during the grinding process and then set on the painting.

In this work, large and small circles are arranged rhythmically vertically, with the large central circle, filled in with oil paint and charcoal, giving it depth and making for a particularly striking presence.

The more you look at it, the more you are drawn into a state of emptiness and the more relaxed your mind becomes.

Why not add a piece by a young contemporary artist whose future endeavors are exciting to look forward to to your home interior or to your art collection?

Akito Inoue

Born in Nagasaki Prefecture (1996-)
Graduated from Nagoya Zokei University, Faculty of Art and Design (2019)

Inoue Akito's consistent theme is the "Circle."

In Japan, the "Enso diagram," based on Buddhist teachings, has long been popular, and the existence of a "circle" is very mysterious and gives rise to various perceptions and interpretations.

What is a "circle"?

The moon, the sun, ripples on water, etc.
Why are people fascinated by circles and what do they find in them?

[Artist Statement]
You can tell without thinking how precisely circular the circle in front of you is.
No one taught me this, and I don't know when I first understood it.
You may have learned this shortly after you were born, when you saw the moon or the sun.
Or was it already in our genes?
Explore with your sense of touch and trace it back.
In front of me is a circle.
