[What Is Cloisonné?]

Cloisonné is a traditional craft in which glass enamel is fired onto a metal surface to create decorative works of art.

The word "shippo" (literally "Seven Treasures") originated from Buddhist scriptures and is said to refer to seven precious materials: agate, pearl, coral, rose quartz, lapis lazuli, gold, and silver. Over time, the term came to describe beautifully fired works that appear to be adorned with these "Seven Treasures," and thus the name shippo (cloisonné) became widely used.

Cloisonné techniques are believed to have been introduced to Japan around 750 CE.
The craft traveled along the Silk Road, moving from Western Europe to China before eventually reaching Japan.

Significant technical development in Japan began during the Keicho period (1596-1615).
By the late Edo period, Owari cloisonné emerged and production flourished rapidly.
The foundations of modern Japanese cloisonné techniques were established during this time.

Through the efforts of countless artisans over many centuries, cloisonné has become recognized today as one of Japan's representative traditional crafts.
