Introducing an original calligraphy artwork by acclaimed contemporary calligrapher Tyjun Nagayama, known for creating the title lettering for the JRA Arima Kinen and for appearances on Japanese television programs including Ravit! (TBS) and Sekai! Nippon Ikitai Hito Oendan (TV Tokyo).

Rooted in the discipline and traditions of classical Japanese calligraphy, Nagayama pushes the medium into new territory by seamlessly merging calligraphy with contemporary art.

Over the years, his artistic practice has continued to evolve. He is particularly recognized for his distinctive approach of transforming kanji characters such as “butterfly” (蝶) and “dragon” (龍) into dynamic, living forms—creating what he calls “figurative characters,” or Gitaimoji. In his works, the written character transcends its literal meaning and takes on the physical presence and movement of the subject itself.

Nagayama has created the title lettering for the prestigious JRA Arima Kinen, held solo exhibitions in Taiwan, and collaborated with Living National Treasure and Noh performer Reijiro Tsumura on the Noh performance Onkyō Kūkan (“Sound, Bridge, Void, Circle”). His work has also been featured on major Japanese television programs, including TBS's morning program Ravit! and TV Tokyo's Sekai! Nippon Ikitai Hito Oendan.

This particular work transforms the kanji character “蝶” (butterfly) into the elegant form of a butterfly spreading its wings.

To create the piece, Nagayama simultaneously works with two different brushes, applying blue-black ink and silver pigment to the tips of ink-loaded brushes. With a single, continuous brush movement—as if writing an actual kanji character—he brings the butterfly to life on the surface of the paper.

The result is a striking work of contemporary calligraphic art in which the character appears to take flight, its wings unfolding with remarkable energy and grace.

Born in Osaka, Japan.

Tyjun Nagayama first picked up a calligraphy brush at the age of four. At 22, he received his gō (artist name), and after a series of meaningful encounters throughout his artistic journey, he began studying under renowned calligrapher Kansho Miyashita at the age of 35.

While remaining deeply committed to the discipline and traditions of classical Japanese calligraphy, Nagayama has developed an innovative artistic practice that brings calligraphy into dialogue with contemporary art.

His work has evolved continuously over the years, and he is now particularly renowned for his distinctive “figurative character” (Gitaimoji) art, in which kanji characters such as “butterfly” (蝶) and “dragon” (龍) are transformed and deconstructed into dynamic forms that appear to embody the living creatures themselves.

Rather than simply representing a word or concept, Nagayama's characters seem to breathe, move, and come alive on the surface of the work.

His artistic activities extend well beyond Japan. He provided the title lettering for the prestigious JRA Arima Kinen, has held solo exhibitions in the UAE and Taiwan, and has created original lettering for the logos of major corporations in Hong Kong.

In recent years, he has also collaborated with Reijiro Tsumura, a Living National Treasure and renowned Noh performer, in the collaborative Noh performance Onkyō Kūkan.

Nagayama has also appeared on numerous Japanese television programs, including the TBS morning information and variety program Ravit! and TV Tokyo's Sekai! Nippon Ikitai Hito Oendan. Through his diverse activities across art, performance, media, and commercial projects, he continues to establish himself as one of Japan's notable contemporary calligraphy artists.
